Lodge Music?

So I'm entertaining the idea of being our Lodge Musician this coming year. I feel that a good selection of music will greatly accent and complement degree work and a few other parts.
Any ideas what you would like to see used or have seen used? I'm currently listening to several selections from Bach Cello Suites and am starting to put together ideas.

Has anyone on here seen music used in Texas degrees? I would love to try it out, and I know it's done elsewhere (not everywhere, of course). But Texas-specific guidance would be great.

I wouldn't imagine things are too terribly different down here that it wouldn't work. I have not seen it used before though.

@Mac

When I visit lodge on Cape Cod, MA they use an organ! Funny the OES at our lodge has an upright piano! Checkout Mozart and his song magic flute. As I understand it, it is an ode to freemasonry. Maybe email Grand Lodge of Texas and see if you can have a musician.

Can you? That would be super cool! I would open with "another one bites the dust" and close with "walk this way" Just kidding! Sort of! Haha! I kid...

That would be super cool of we could do music for degrees! Let me know what you find out!

Well, I mean we had a Musician at one point. Not sure if there are any official standpoints on what kind and where the music can be played though. I quick sniff in the Law book should tell us.

Some monitors from other states had specific music to play during the fellow craft lecture. Don't think we ever included it.

Mozart made a whole slew of masonic music, and I'm sure that there are cd's out there titles as such. That could be a good start.

Is there anything stating where and when music can be used either in GL law or committee on guidelines?

We use to sing versus during the circle of ambulation, that was changed with Lightfoot as most lodges stopped singing at that point. Also singing during the second part of the MMs degree, which we still do today (not very well, either). ;)

In California the scripture quotation for the perambulation is assigned to a "Singer or Speaker". I never saw them sung during the time I resided in the state. At least the second degree quotation is a different passage than the one used in Texas. When visiting a third degree in Texas I was surprised to learn the dirge was a different one than I'd learned in my previous two states. And no lodge ever seems to sing the dirge well, agreed.

Music during degrees, stated meetings or public events is wonderful and varied when it's available at all. During a recent installation the organist played a bit for each officer as he was marched to his chair. We got to hear bits of the Marine, Army and Air Force anthems. When the secretary was marched back to the super-glued chair it started with Popeye the Sailor Man then switched to Anchors Away. Lighten the moment!

Sibelius and Mozart have music specifically for specific parts of the ritual. A Sibelius CD was available with the GL of NY. Maybe still. Also UGLE uses music for their ritual; google that.

In Massachusetts, I've noticed that most of the lodges I've visited have an organ in the room. Unfortunately not all the lodges have an organist available. I like the fact that at my lodge, Mount Carmel, we do have an organist. It really sets the mood. I'm not sure what the music is he plays but during degree work its appropriate to the situation. At lighter points during the night (during breaks, reconvening after dinner...) I've heard everything from the Giligan's Island theme to take me out to the ball game.

He'll also add 'sound effects' to enhance some of the actions that take place during the ritual. I think that helps immerse the candidates in the ritual.

It always amazes me the connections you make as a Mason. I work less than a mile from Tyrian Lodge and a Texas Mason belongs to a lodge on our southern doorstep!

Wor. Streeter,
Our organist may be interested in looking over your book. You may already know him, he's also the Junior Steward at John T. Heard lodge in your district. :)
