Going dark in the summer

Our lodge goes dark in the summer, but I've heard brothers from other lodges around the country say they have no dark period. Is it a preference of each lodge?

I believe it's a preference. My district has a combination of those that go dark and those that do not.

Yes, I started a thread not too long ago about this. I'm sure about the rest of my jurisdiction, but I know all the lodges in my district go dark.

As far as I can tell, our district does also. We're back in September.

Im not sure where everyone is from but from what I've gathered lodges in the north tend to go dark more than lodges in the south. Im from Alabama and as far as I know none of ours go dark. I am in State College PA for the summer and I really wanted to visit the lodge here but I found out it is dark until August.

Yeah, I'm in Ohio brother. Maybe it's a primarily northern thing.

We go dark in July and August, as does my Scottish Rite Valley. This is a historically agricultural area, and when the days were long in the summer, the farmers had work to do, so it's carried over to today. Our second floor lodge room is not air conditioned, either, and it can be stiflingly hot up there.

Here in San Angelo, I have seen my lodge dark only one time, and that was when a stated meeting fell on New Year's Day, otherwise, we are always light.
